Visitor Information
Dear friends and visitors,
The 'Friends of Purton' wish to issue the warmest of Gloucestershire welcomes to all who come to take in the sights and sounds of the largest ships' graveyard in mainland Britain. However, please be advised that the collection is situated on privately owned land and access is only possible with the continued good will and support of both landowners and villagers.
Purton welcomes considerate visitors and therefore, we request that you kindly help to preserve the delicate balance of this archaeological time capsule site, which is situated in the heart of an active farming community and a region rich in flora and fauna, by observing the following good practice and neighbourly conduct:
Ensure car sharing is practised where ever possible and kindly utilise the village car park, situated opposite the church;
The site should be entered via the Severn Way, the tow path alongside the Sharpness to Gloucester Canal;
Please consider residents' privacy whilst passing through the village;
Dogs should remain on a lead whilst passing Canalbank Cottages and owners are requested to remove faeces to the bins provided;
Whilst on the site, please remain on designated footpaths;
There are no public toilets or shopping facilities at Purton, kindly prepare for this;
Please observe the Countryside Code by removing litter and closing all gates;
As a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) camping and open fires are prohibited at all times;
As a unique archaeological site climbing on the remains and the removal of artefacts is strictly prohibited;
You and your family's personal safety remains your responsibly at all times.
Thank you for your co–operation, in doing so you enable this wonderful rural idyll to be enjoyed by all those that follow.
Have a safe and memorable day
